TOPANGA RESIDENCE
location: Topanga, CA
architect: David Hertz AIA, Studio of Environmental Architecture
status: Completed 2020
A new single-family residence that features extensive exposed wood framing, nestled in the hills of Topanga, CA. WPe worked with the architect to specify flitch beams (wood spliced with steel plates) to accommodate the long spans supporting an occupied terrace whilst maintaining the expression of the sawn wood floor structure.
The detailing was carefully coordinated with the architect, given that little of the framing is hidden by cladding and ceilings. The expression extends to the exterior frames that create an open trellis structure above the terraces.
The second-floor roof features a leaf-like splayed wood beam framing arrangement around a full width clerestory.
