Remodel of the Santa Monica headquarters of the non-profit environmental advocacy group. The historic building, adjacent to the Santa Monica waterfront, was originally constructed in early 20th century and expanded in the early 2000s. WPe supported the architect to strengthen the building to allow for extensive new roof terraces, planting, photovoltaic canopies, and interior renovations.
WPe engaged under-utilized concrete masonry walls to mitigate the need for new exterior shear walls and maintain the existing fenestration, whilst allowing for the considerable added mass of the rooftop structures and planting.
Existing interior shear walls were reinforced, and a new transfer moment frame was introduced to allow for an enlarged public “Environmental Action Center” at the front of the property.
