An elegant remodel of an existing beachfront residence in Malibu. A new moment frame allowed for a completely open, ocean-facing front elevation and a new supporting steel beam at the second floor allows for a column and wall free grand room at the ground floor.

The framing was carefully proportioned and located to ensure no significant changes to the foundations, streamlining the permit review process.

The project features a unique wood and steel stringerless swtichback staircase. It uses laser cut steel plates to span gracefully between levels sandwiched between staggered 2x4 hardwood blocks. The design required careful vibration analysis to maintain a consistent thickness of less than 4”.
